Human fascination for space is irrepressible. Ever since Nicolas Copernicus and Galileo Galili laid foundations for studies and researches on solar system in the 15th and 16th centuries, it was a continuous process of intensive efforts to know more and more about space, stars and planets in the Milky Way galaxy. Scientific expeditions and explorations are continuing even now indicating the strong human resolve. Astronomy is a favourite subject matter for many all over the world, in their pursuit of knowledge about the universe. Enthusiasts throng planetariums and observatories in their quest for information in this area of scientific studies.
In this era of internet, there are plethora of resources to gain access to the vast fields of information about space and other constellations. But still the news about a mobile phone application that can help people to identify stars and planets is an exciting one. It is Google which is hailed as the God of internet that is preparing to launch the innovative product. Star gazing is not an easy task for people. Looking at the skies even with ordinary telescopes will not be enough to view the spectacle. Lights from various sources, dust, clouds and other atmospheric disturbances will hinder the star gazing efforts. Google, according to available information is going to introduce software for the purpose. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology will be adopted in this endeavour, to fix the location of the mobile phone used in the process.
The existing Google maps will be suitably recreated in collaboration with British Astronomy Technology Centre which is an affiliate of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. Palomar Observatory of California, The space Telescope Science Institute, The Digital Sky Survey Consortium, The Solar Digital Sky Survey and The Anglo Australian Observatory are other institutions that are collaborating with Google in this epoch making project. The mobile phone application is christened ‘Star Droid’ that can help the people to identify stars and planets through the view finder. Tags will be provided in the sky map with the name of the particular planet or star on the focus.
Star Droid, the star exploration gadget will help students who learn astronomy and others who pursue the subject as a hobby. It is understood that a California based internet provider has offered Google to provide maps, which are similar to Google Earth. Google’s effort to develop software to provide opportunity for mobile phone users to watch the skies and learn about planets and stars is an unique endeavour. Humanity will reap rich dividends from the experiences that await the cellular phone users in the coming years. Even though Google have not yet announced the exact date of launch of their new product, the news about its introduction has created unprecedented interests and enthusiasm among the people. Posterity will definitely remain indebted to the God of Internet for the boon bestowed on the mobile users.
